Kudu feeding
Photos of an unusual kudu. We came to know him as Grumpy because he would not share with any other animal.

Mabula 2009
We had a familay holiday at Mabula Game Lodge towards the end of September 2009. Mabula has a well organised Ground Hornbill project, where they would take the "Abel" egg from nests in the Kruger Park and hand rear them. This is Kingfisher, who decided to come and pay us a visit one afternoon. She had just become famous as she was the first hand-reared Ground Hornbill to successfully hatch a fledgling (Baby Jack) of her own. She and her mate Storm were quite happy to come up to us but Baby Jack and his helper Thor kept their distance, probably coming no nearer than 50m. At one stage Kingfisher came right into our unit and nabbed one of my baby daughter's toys and tried to eat it. We assume it must have looked like a small animal to her. She gave up after about a minute of trying to determine if it was edible. we were just wondering how we were going to explain it if she did manage to eat the toy, headlines like "Guests feed stuffed toy to Hornbill, Hornbill chokes" were going through our minds. Were we glad when she dropped it!

Sunset
A magic African sunset.

What a big fish!
These are golden (or freshwater ) dorado. Native to South America.

Winter in the Free State
Some photos taken from a visit to a Free State farm in the middle of June (2009). Let's just say temperatures were low. Very low. You may have heard the expression "so flat that if your dog ran away you would seeing it going for a week", believe us it is true here. Of course that also means there is nothing to slow the wind down when it gets going.
